Art in Motion is the dance concert now produced by Theatre & Dance in conjunction with our new minor. This is a fully-realized production, with scenery, costumes, and lighting by faculty and students.
The first concert took place in February 2024. It contained 10 pieces: 6 created by Ashley, 2 created by student choreographers, 1 from professional modern company Nova Linea Dance set on the company during a weekend residency, and an invited piece from Kinesis Dance. It was designed by a team of lighting designers. I mentored two student calling stage managers to call light cues for multiple pieces each, and called the remaining pieces myself. I also mentored an assistant stage manager who had never worked backstage in dance. The concert was partially remounted in October 2024, with 5 returning works joined by 3 new works. I mentored a new assistant stage manager on running backstage. Because this was the fourth production in a fall semester that normally only has three shows, I called all of the pieces myself. I learned both the new works and the ones called by students the previous spring and ran the show alone.
The concert represents all of the technique styles taught in the minor: modern dance, ballet, tap, jazz, and musical theatre dance. Each requires a nuanced understanding of movement and terminology, and each has a slightly different style of lighting. And because not all dancers have theatre or concert production experience, we also incorporate several components that teach the dancers how to work in a professional arts organization.
