As Production Manager for the Department of Theatre & Dance, I oversee all of the business-related aspects of our season.

SCHEDULING

BUDGETING

I create the production calendar for each year. It tracks the design, rehearsal, and performance dates for each show, shows how they intersect with one another, and overlap with academic deadlines, holidays, and breaks.

I develop and manage the budgets for each year. This includes income projections and actuals for each show, and expenses in scenery, costumes, props, lighting, sound, special effects, student labor, and a host of other administrative and university costs and reconcile them against two different UWL accounts.

ROYALTIES & CONTRACTING

I research all scripts whose title come up in department-wide season planning discussions, investigate costs and availability, and then coordinate with Business Services and the Contracting Office to execute licensing agreements and obtain scripts and scores for all productions.

If a production has an original or adapted script, I work with the director regarding drafts and timelines to ensure everyone has materials well in advance of the design process.

SAFETY

I coordinate the safety needs for each production, working with the Technical Director and Facilities when needed. I maintain all of our first aid kits as well as a comprehensive safety website with references and policies.  During COVID, this site also housed industry, university, and production safety guidelines and was shared with the public. The site was originally created as part of an Advanced Stage Management semester focused on production management. I update and oversee the content.

GUEST ARTISTS

Theatre & Dance looks for opportunities to expand student experiences and bring guest artists to campus whenever feasible. I manage the schedules, contracts, housing, and transportation for these residencies.  In recent years guest have included Nova Linea Contemporary Dance, a guest lighting designer, a guest stage manager, and a guest musical director.

WHATEVER COMES UP!

No matter how much we plan, there seems always to be a need to turn our black box theatre into a temporary dance studio, reconceive the season, find collaborative partners to record the shows, and learn to caption recorded productions so they can stream during COVID, or pack up to take over as the stage manager of a production that needs to tour in early January!
